Ford moves to privatize garbage collection
[attach]3539[/attach]Garbage privatization is on its way.
City hall has provided official notice to the union representing outside workers that it plans to recommend a competitive bid process for residential garbage collection west of Yonge Street, citywide vacuum litter collection and refuse and recycling collection in city parks.
“This initial move to potentially privatize some garbage collection services is a key promise that was made during the 2010 election campaign,” said Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong, Chair, Public Works and Infrastructure Committee in a press release. “We anticipate that we will see financial savings while, at the same time, ensuring continued high customer service standards and less likelihood of citywide labour disruptions of the kind we have experienced in the past.”
City staff will prepare a report for council’s consideration, with the document coming to the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee meeting on April 26. Council could make its final decision as early as mid-May.
No changes in service would occur before mid-2012. Approximately 300 jobs would be affected if the system is privatized.
