Kennedy back as catholic school trustee
Catholic school trustee Angela Kennedy has been voted back in to her seat representing Ward 11 despite a controversial tenure that resulted in her ousting just a few months ago.
Kennedy, who was recently fired from her job as chair of the Toronto Catholic District School Board, won over four other candidates with 47.16 percent of the vote. She’s represented Beach and East York parents at the Catholic school board since November 2000.
Kennedy has faced her share of troubles as trustee in the 2006-2010 term. A provincial judge removed her from her position as chair on Aug. 19, ruling she contravened the Conflict of Interest Act by voting on a budget matter in 2008.
After the ruling, Kennedy said she wasn’t planning to seek re-election, but had an about-face and registered to run Sept. 10, the last day to do so.
Reached at her home as the poll numbers came in, Kennedy said, “it is a joy to regain my services as a Trustee for the Toronto Catholic School Board, but it was tough to compete against such deserving opponents… I want to do what is best for the students and try to unite the board by moving forward.”
Kevin Morrison came in second for the Ward 11 race with 33.27 percent of the vote.
Kennedy’s firing was the latest in a string of conflicts involving members of the Catholic school board.
For over a year now, the board has been in the charge of provincially appointed supervisor, Richard Alway. Former education minister Kathleen Wynne appointed Alway last August to help rectify past problems of accountability and transparency at the board.
