Last call for Mint

Illegal nightclub Mint has closed down after its landlord, The Unicorn Pub, terminated its lease.

The decision comes after a battle with the city that saw Mint’s owner plead guilty to operating a venue without a proper licence.

The club faced two further charges in March for operating with fewer seats than required to operate as a restaurant and/or bar and for having noise being audible from the premises after 11 p.m.

Ward 22 councillor Josh Matlow is pleased the battle is over. The fight to make Mint abide by local bylaws or shut down was one of the first causes he championed as a councillor.

“When I first met with (residents), they complained that this had been going on for far too long,” he said. “It was having such an adverse effect on their basic quality of life, like their ability to sleep and their sense of safety.

“I can’t express how happy I am now that those residents may get a little more peace of mind,” he added. “Having said that, we’ve got to remain vigilant.”
