Mid-July storm caused major flooding across the city
The July 15 rainstorm that dumped up to 88 millimetres of rain on parts of the city resulted in over 500 reports of basement flooding.
According to Toronto Water, the majority of reported incidents were centred in southwest Scarborough, which saw the heaviest recorded rainfall, with 374 complaints. The remaining floods occurred throughout the city.
While the total amount of rainfall was less than the August 2005 storm that battered North York, Environment Canada says the storm exceeded the definition of a one-in-100-year storm, which at minimum dumps 63.1 millimetres of precipitation on an area in the course of two hours or less.
As part of its review of stormwater management, the city is looking at redesigning its systems to be able to better handle one-in-100-year storms.
