Pair of sites mulled for arena

North York councillors have narrowed their search for a replacement site for the Civitan Arena to two options.

At a June 13 meeting councillors asked staff to gauge community interest in two possible locations: a parcel of land at York Mills and the Don Valley Parkway, and a location next to the Ontario Science Centre at Eglinton Avenue and Don Mills Road.

An alternative site at Norman Ingram Field pitched by the Don Mills Residents Inc. proved too costly and was not formally considered by councillors.

Parties interested in partnering with the city to build an arena on the two preferred sites are being asked to present a business plan.

Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong has moved to forbid residential redevelopment applications as part of a future arena deal for the York Mills site.

“The property is ringed by residential homes, so in my view it would be inappropriate from a planning point of view to allow any type of residential development, multi-residential development,” he told the Town Crier.
