BLOCKED OFF: Police tape blocked access to the building at 199 Upper Canada Dr., in the York Mills area where 22-year-old Travis Tash was killed.

Police have identified the man killed near Yonge Street and Highway 401 last week as 22-year-old Travis Tash.

Tash was found face down on a steep embankment behind the low-rise apartment building at 199 Upper Canada Dr. at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 11. Police have not released a cause of death, but officers at the scene said he suffered severe neck trauma, and some residents reported hearing a single gunshot the night before.

Officers at the scene also said Tash was well known to them and that there was some gang activity in the area. Aside from a grouping of low-rise buildings, the neighbourhood is populated by multi-million dollar detached homes.

Tash was arrested in October 2010 near Jane Street and Finch Avenue West after allegedly seeing police and discarding a sawed-off shotgun. He was charged with various weapons offences as well as possession of cocaine.

Police have not given any suspect information in Tash’s murder, which was the city’s 33rd homicide of the year.
