Residents troubled by midtown developments

A number of residents in Forest Hill are concerned about the development of inappropriately large houses in the neighbourhood, says St. Paul’s Ward 21 councillor Joe Mihevc.

City council adopted an item by Mihevc requesting a study to see if the current zoning standards in the neighbourhood are appropriate.

“They’re really more appropriate in a suburban setting than in a midtown setting like Forest Hill,” he said. “Many residents feel it’s changing the very character of (the neighbourhood).”

A report from city staff is expected to come to community council sometime in 2012 recommending whether or not new zoning standards are needed for the area, which is roughly bounded by Eglinton Avenue West to the north, Cedervale Ravine to the south, Richview Avenue to the west and Spadina Road to the east.

“I’m not against development and redevelopment, that’s what happens in healthy neighbourhoods,” Mihevc said. “It’s really to take a time out and say ‘Okay, what is the appropriate height and density?’ ”
