Royal wedding buzz hits home

Longtime friends Susie Beamish and Rosemarie Mohring are regally excited for their trip to England set for late April.

After all, this ain’t any old trip across the pond: the pair will be witness to one of the most anticipated weddings of the decade.

Beamish, a member of the Monarchist League of Canada, jumped at the opportunity when she received an email asking about interest in heading to England for the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

“Of course, I replied right away,” she says.

The Danforth and Donlands resident then asked friends, including Leasider Mohring whom she met back in the day at U of T, and she too, was on board.

The pair are preparing to be on the front line as the world watches the April 29 event, the likes of which can only be compared to the marriage of Prince Charles to the late Princess Diana in 1981.

Come April 24, Beamish and Mohring, along with a Canadian contingent of Monarchists, will jet off with a full itinerary. Though the pair won’t be inside Westminster Abbey for the actual ceremony, they’ve got plenty of other places to be.

“One of the highlights of our tour is going to be the Tower of London tea ceremony,” Mohring said of the exclusive ceremony for tourists that has a months-long wait for invitations.

“A lot of people got letters back saying ‘No, sorry,’ but I happened to get one back saying I was accepted and so was Susie.”

Invitation or not, as soon as Beamish realized she could pay for the trip, she said said there was no way she was staying home.

“I could watch it on television,” she said. “But there’s nothing like actually being there.

“It’s a trip where I think I can relax and not have to be anxious about anything, but on top of that it should be really exciting to be there.”

But it’s not just the royal wedding, the tower, or even the historical significance that makes the trip worthwhile.

“Besides that, I am a devoted Coronation Street fan,” Mohring says with a laugh.

Beamish is also a fan of the famed British soap.

“Both of us have actually been to Coronation Street,” Beamish said of the pair’s dedication to the show, advising that during an episode of “Corrie”, Mohring is not to be interrupted.

“You can’t phone her when Coronation Street comes on.”
