Scene of horror on Marlee

Bystanders described a scene of horror after a woman was stabbed outside a Marlee Avenue mini-mart earlier today.

The woman had been shopping in the convenience store at Marlee and Roselawn Avenues when a man reportedly approached her and demanded money. The woman refused, and tried to get away from him, reports indicate.

“As I’m walking away from the store, they get into the middle of the street and the girl starts screaming ‘stop’,” said Elisa Maesa, who was in the store when the man approached the woman. “The girl started going (back) into the store and the man pulls her hair and she was back outside again.”

Maesa said the fight escalated, and she ran to a bus stop, where a bystander called 911. She followed the attacker until police arrested him a few blocks from the scene.

“I ran back to the scene and that’s how I noticed the girl was stabbed,” she said. “I didn’t realize she was fighting for her life.”

Maesa’s husband David Huha, who was nearby at the time of the incident, said he watched as two police officers performed CPR on the woman.

The victim was taken to Sunnybrook Hospital.

Police on the scene did not release her name or age. Officers said a man was taken into custody two blocks away from the scene.

Police would not comment on whether or not the individuals knew each other.

Incidents like this do not happen often in the neighbourhood, Huha said, but when they do it’s like a wake-up call.

“I know we don’t need this in our neighbourhood,” he said. “We’ve got to put a stop to it.”
