Bloor Collegiate Bears tamed in tight game
Oakwood power forward Allison Domagas gave the Bloor Collegiate Bears defence fits as she led the Barons with 20 points in a 54-37 victory on the hardcourt.
With the win at Bloor Collegiate Oct. 29, Oakwood now stands at 3-3, a status that pleases coach Lisa Palozzi.
“We didn’t have a great start to the season and we’re now starting to get a lot better,” the rookie basketball coach said. “I’m really happy to be (at .500) and now our goal is to improve at home.”
On the upshot for the Golden Bears was Sandra Fung, who in going head-to-head with Domagas was trading scoring opportunities in what was a fiery first quarter.
Even though Oakwood had the lead 10-8 heading into the second they were still on edge over their start.
“We started a little slow and weren’t doing the little things,” Domagas said.
Fung, who picked up 19 points on the afternoon including six in the first, displayed some efficient defence in the second quarter.
Along with teammate Neena Salifu, she intercepted several Oakwood passes. Despite the great defence they couldn’t completely shut down the Barons’ offence as Oakwood increased their lead to 24-17 at the half.
“We were moving the ball well up the floor and have really improved our ball handling skills,” Bloor coach Patty Barklay said. “We’re really improving in all areas and I’m very proud of my team.”
The Golden Bears demonstrated determination and resilience in the second half as they continued to press on offence.
As a result, they narrowed the deficit to 29-25 late in the third, but that would be the closest they would get in a thrilling finale to the regular season.
