Blue Raiders win hoops invitational again

St. Michael’s Blue Raiders beat Father Henry Carr 64-44 on Jan. 12 to finish the 54th annual St. Michael’s Invitational undefeated and win the hoops tournament for the second consecutive year.

The finals game was a close contest up to halftime, until starting Raider point guard Nelson Kaputo caught fire. He scored 25 points in the second half, draining consecutive three-pointers and finishing the game with 31 points.

The Jan. 9–12 tournament, played at St. Michael’s College School, brought together the best basketball squads in the Greater Toronto region.

The defending OFSAA champion Blue Raiders took on Oakwood Barons, who are first in the TDSSAA standings, along with Henry Carr and Brampton’s St. Edmund Campion.

Oakwood finished the tournament in fourth place, losing 58-44 in the semifinal, and then 60-52 to St. Edmund Campion in the third-place game.

Leaside Flames scorch opponents

Leaside Flames clinched first over-all for age groups at the Jan. 10-12 Toronto Aeros Winter Challenge Tournament at Chesswood Arena.

The Minor Atom A, Peewee A, Bantam AA and Midget Junior A Flames all placed first in their age groups, and then won their finals contests.

The Bantam AA Flames scored 38 goals in five games and beat Etobicoke Canucks 6-2 in the final.

The Peewee squad won all five games, including a 2-1 finals win over the host Aeros.

The Minor Atom team finished the tournament at 4-0-1, beating North Toronto 3-2 in the finals. The Midget A Flames beat
St. Eustache Patriotes 2–1 in the finals.

Marc Garneau curls back into competition

The Marc Garneau Cougars varsity boys A-squad curling team returned from the holidays with a convincing 13-4 win over Oliver Mowat Mustangs Jan. 14 in Scarborough.

After a 7-2 loss to Birchmount Park’s B-squad on Dec. 3, and only two more games before the playoffs begin in late February, the Garneau rink played with a sense of urgency to gain a playoff position.

Competing in Pool 2 of the East Region, the Cougars sit in second place, behind Birchmount Park’s B-squad and Oliver Mowat.

They play Sir John A. MacDonald Jan. 31 and face York Mills Collegiate Feb. 11.
