Stabbing shakes Greenwood Avenue
The father of missing teen Mariam Makhniashvili will remain in custodyon attempted murder and other charges after a November stabbing thatleft a quiet Leslieville neighbourhood reeling.
Neighbours, reporters and police swarmed the Greenwood Avenue home ofDavid and Delores Langer on Nov. 4 after reports the husband and wifehad been stabbed.
With the front lawn littered with debris, and blood strewn across thefront steps of the town home, the worry and curiosity of onlookers waspalpable.
Victor Su, owner of Chino Locos just steps from the Langer’s home, saidhe heard a horrific scream coming from the house around noon. Afterstepping outside, he witnessed a woman in her bathrobe throwing objectsat a man. It appeared the woman’s arm was bleeding, he said.
“It’s a scene that you wouldn’t expect in a neighbourhood like this,” Su said.
Vakhtang Makhniashvili, 50, turned himself in to Toronto police a fewminutes after the attack. Last fall, his daughter Mariam went missingon her way to school. Police say they have no leads in thedisappearance.
The Langers — who were taken to St. Michael’s Hospital with multiplewounds — acted as sureties for Makhniashvili after he was charged withanother stabbing in May.
David Langer was stabbed in the abdomen while his wife was stabbed inthe arm. Neither is considered to have life-threatening injuries.
