Valuable paintings gone

An early morning smash-and-grab at the upscale Gallery Gevik has owner Phillip Gevik planning on implementing new security measures.

The three abstract paintings, worth about $50,000, composed by Quebec artist Pierre Gauvreau, City in turmoil, Ballad for John Wayne and Night caught between daylight, were set to appear in his Retrospective art show.

Although no arrests have been made in the Sept. 27 incident, police are reviewing tips and security camera footage from adjacent stores for leads and suspects.

“I would like to have those paintings back,” said Gevik. “It’s a very bad feeling, because you create the installation and everything looks good. It takes a long time.”

Gevik speaks very highly of the 87-year-old Canadian artist Pierre Gauvreau, explaining his work is very well received and respected in Quebec. These rare paintings are part of Gauvreau’s early works, produced in 1979 and 1980 and had a historical significance according to Gevik.
