Veteran MPP Marchese faces fight
Former mayoral candidate Thomson among contenders
The riding of Trinity-Spadina has known no other MPP than the NDP’s Rosario Marchese.
He’s represented the riding since it was created in 1999. Before then, he had been the MPP of Fort York.
Marchese is hoping to continue his 21-year run at Queen’s Park with a victory in the Oct. 6 provincial election. However, the longtime incumbent will have to fend off challenges from Liberal Sarah Thomson and Progressive Conservative Mike Yen.
Thomson, the publisher of the Women’s Post, made an abortive bid to become Toronto’s mayor last fall, dropping out part of the way through to throw her support behind George Smitherman.
PC candidate Mike Yen ran for city councillor in Ward 20 in 2010. The four-year resident of the riding lost despite an endorsement from Rob Ford.
