War vet addresses his Northern alma mater

Maj. Trevor Norton tells of his experiences in Afghanistan

Afghanistan veteran and Northern SS graduate Maj. Trevor Norton spoke at his old school’s Remembrance Day ceremony this morning, reflecting on his three tours of duty.

In a brief address Norton, who serves with the Royal Canadian Regiment, told Grade 11 and 12 students about having lost soldiers under his command in Afghanistan, and about the pain of losing a close friend.

Capt. Jon Snyder died in 2008 after falling into a well while on a night patrol with the Afghan National Army.

Norton, 37, recalled getting the news while he was in a Starbucks in Toronto, and quickly headed to Trenton for Snyder’s repatriation.

The memory that has stuck with him since then, he said, was the image of seeing “thousands of Canadians” come to see Snyder off.
