Girl hit by car in Lawrence Manor parking lot

A girl, 6, is in hospital with life-threatening injuries after being hit by an SUV in the parking area at 10 Flemington Rd. The girl had been with her mother in the parking area. See the story as we know it so far.

Stolen medication could be harmful: police

A container containing of Oxyneo was stolen in the area of Yonge Street and Davisville Avenue on July 18 between 2 and 8 p.m., police report. The stolen medication could be harmful, even fatal, if ingested and is especially dangerous to children. Anyone with information on its whereabouts should contact police immediately, they say.

Police also report the theft of Oxycodone tablets from a parked vehicle near Danforth and Broadview avenues overnight on July 18 and 19. They are not saying whether the thefts are considered connected.

Images of three released in coffee shop robbery investigation

Four months ago a woman was robbed while sitting in a midtown coffee shop. She gave chase but the robbers got away — except for photos taken when two men used her stolen bank cards at a nearby convenience store. Now police have released images of three people in their investigation. See the full story and photos.

Oliphant’s Canada Day celebration on July 1

Don Valley East and West reps hold their annual Canada Celebration tomorrow. MPs Rob Oliphant and Yasmine Ratansi, plus MPPs Michael Coteau and Kathleen Wynne host the event at Aga Khan Park, 77 Wynford Dr., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Free food, drinks and entertainment are featured.

Celebrants are advised to bring a refillable water bottle, a chair, and/or umbrella and sunscreen. Free parking is available at Canada Post.

Input sought on city’s decision-making

NDP candidate Laurel MacDowell

NDP candidate chosen in Don Valley West

Retired history professor Laurel MacDowell has been nominated as NDP candidate in the coming federal election.

MacDowell has lived in the area for more than 30 years and raised three children here. The biggest issue for her is climate change, which she calls “not only an ecological crisis but a human crisis.

MacDowell says she is looking for both financial support and volunteers in her campaign.

She will be challenging Liberal Rob Oliphant, who has been MP for the riding for seven of the past 11 years.

Community centre reopens amid hoopla

After more than a year of being mostly closed for renovations, the North Toronto Memorial Community Centre was reopened yesterday. Toronto mayor John Tory, Eglinton-Lawrence councillor Mike Colle and city staff led the community celebration.

Part of the centre was closed in March 2018 to undergo renovations including a new roof and skylight, pool upgrades, mechanical and change-room upgrades, a new building automation system and accessibility improvements, among other fixes. “This important community hub has become even more valuable to the community and surrounding area with the many changes that have been implemented,” Colle said, according to a city press release. Photos of alleged naked man released

Police have released photos of a man taken in 2018 during an alleged naked jogging incident and are hoping the public can identify him — since he has been identified as the naked man who approached women in midtown parks last month. He’s also been identified as the naked jogger observed in the Moore Park area in 2017. See the full story and photos.

Part of subway Line 1 shut down on Sunday

If you’re heading downtown by transit on Sunday, you may want to consider an alternative route. Subway service between St. Clair and Union stations will be shut down on June 9 for installation of the new automatic train control signalling system, the TTC says. Shuttle buses will operate and Wheel-Trans service will be available for customers requiring accessible service within the closure area.

Woman assaulted, robbed in condo elevator

Police have released a video of man being sought after a woman, 35, was robbed of her purse in a condominium building near St. Clair Avenue West and Avenue Road in early morning on June 2.  An unknown man allegedly the woman into an elevator and indicated he had a gun, before assaulting her and taking the purse. See the full news story and picture.

Rain can’t keep St. Monica’s from raising funds

Despite the inclement weather, St. Monica’s Catholic School successfully held its annual Spring Bazaar on May 25, complete with baked goods, crafts, a yard sale, a fire truck and bouncy castles.  For lots of pictures of people having fun, see the story.
