Driver sought following North York car chase
One man is in custody and another is being sought after a dramatic police chase in North York yesterday.
Police allege that just before 1 p.m. on July 26, a Toronto OPP officer saw the driver of a Honda Civic using a cellular device while driving on Highway 401.
After attempting to pull over the vehicle, the Civic instead took the Dufferin exit from the highway. The driver continued to avoid police by driving through a red light, almost striking a pedestrian, police say.
The fleeing man then pulled into a housing complex and took off on foot. According to police, the officer stayed in pursuit, but the man fled the scene after getting into a Honda Accord that had pulled up. A civilian who witnessed the events allowed the officer into his vehicle to chase after the Accord, which drove into another housing complex. At that time, both suspects got out of the Accord and ran, police say.
After help from anonymous tipsters and Toronto police, the driver of the Honda Civic was apprehended at a nearby residence.
Nicholas Wong, 24, was arrested without incident and now faces multiple charges, including dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, obstructing police, driving while under suspension, drive no validated permit, driving while using a handheld
electronic device, and failing to stop for police with pursuit.
A second suspect – the driver of the Honda Accord – is still being sought by police.
