Aug. 9: Those gutsy newsgirls

In the book Newsgirls: Gutsy Pioneers in Canada’s Newsrooms, author Donna Jean MacKinnon documents the careers of ten women working in the newspapers’ Golden Age (1930–1960) when reportage informed and shaped public opinion, often scooping news hounds like Pierre Berton.

MacKinnon’s amusing presentation at the Central Eglinton Community Centre includes 30 vintage photos of newsgirls on the job.

She is presenting on Aug. 9 at 1:30 p.m. at the CECC, second floor, 160 Eglinton Ave. E.

It’s free to CECC members and $6 to non-members.

The registration and payment deadline is Aug. 2.
