Consultation for controversial Forest Hill plan scheduled

A community consultation meeting has been scheduled for 390–398 Spadina Rd., the site in Forest Hill Village where developers have proposed a 35.5-metre, nine-storey mixed-use building.

Residents concerned about or supporting the proposal, which exceeds the 12-metre, four-storey height limit in the Forest Hill Village Design Guidelines and has been opposed by city staff and Ward 21 Councillor Joe Mihevc, will be invited to voice their opinion on Oct. 20.

“This particular project is certainly pushing the envelope,” Mihevc said. “It’s up to the community to weigh in on whether it’s an acceptable development.”

The site, which once held a video store and the former Village Idiot pub, lies at the southwestern edge of what the guidelines designate “character zone A,” a mix of commercial and mixed-use developments considered the heart of the neighbourhood.

In a previous interview, Mihevc said it’s likely that developer Armel Corporation was comparing the site to some of the neighbouring apartment buildings, such as the six-storey rental and condominium apartment buildings at 55 and 60 Montclair Ave.

The Oct. 20 meeting is to begin at 7 p.m. at Grace Church on-the-Hill, 300 Lonsdale Rd.
