North Region lights it up

[u]A.Y. Jackson Secondary School[/u]

This year’s top Jaguars as given by Phys. Ed. teacher Beth Spiegelman were Florin Cattatulea and Jennifer Lee.

[u]Bayview Glen School[/u]

Raquel Soon-Shiang
Multi-talented and hard-working, Soon-Shiang was considered the “heart and soul” of the Gryphons’ basketball, volleyball and soccer teams. She has also played in softball and rep soccer outside of the school. This year the 18-year-old also scored an academic average of 89 percent.

At age 16, Kim has made waves, especially in the swimming pool. He picked up bronze at the TDCAA meet and qualified for OFSAA. In addition to his water wings, he is an accomplished visual artist.

She may be 15, but Bird has a way on the court. This tennis star from Willowdale grabbed a bronze in the TCDSB meets. Not just a clever surname, this Cardinal Carter sophomore is a songbird, singing the national anthem at the Blue Jays game.

This 17-year-old fought it out on the ski slopes, volleyball courts and rugby pitch during the 2010–2011 school year. Throughout his academic career Williams was on the honour roll and was school prefect in grade 12, planning all of Crescent’s social events. Not one to skimp on charity, he also worked on an outreach service project in Tanzania.

[u]Crestwood Preparatory School[/u]

Jordan Rose
On three teams this season, Rose was a key edition to the volleyball, basketball and softball squads. The big accomplishment was winning back-to-back CISAA Division 1 senior boys basketball championships. Not quiet in the classroom either, Rose had a 95 percent average.

Lauren Weingarten
She’s a threat on the court, a threat on the ice and on the field too. Weingarten, considered one of the top basketball players in the city, averaged 20 points per game for the past two seasons.

Coming in from Bruins country is Li Hao Zhong and Holly Anderson the top two athletes from the Donway.

[u]Earl Haig Secondary School[/u]

Haig State’s captain of the soccer, hockey and ultimate Frisbee team, Kotwa led his Frisbee troupe to the North Region championships. The grade 12 student also finished the year with a 93 percent average.

She’s everything rugby at her Willowdale school. When she’s not rucking it out on the pitch, she’s indoors at the net for her volleyball team. She was instrumental in leading the girls rugby team to the Tier II championship.

Not too many students can say that one of their sports is archery, but for Duncan-Thibault, it certainly is along with table tennis and volleyball. When he’s not on the court or sizing up the bullseye, he’s hard at work as a winner of math and chemistry contests.

Only 16, St. Denis is making her presence known at Étienne-Brûlé on the cross-country, table tennis, volleyball and track and field teams. She’s a published writer, on the yearbook committee and is an accomplished pianist and ballet dancer.

It’s a busy slate for Sadman as he’s busy with volleyball, basketball, golf, beach volleyball, cricket as well as taking time out for intramurals in Lions country.

One tough contender on the court when playing volleyball is Mohammad-Ali. She’s also formidable in soccer and beach volleyball.

[u]Georges Vanier Secondary School[/u]

He may be the team captain of the Vikings baseball squad, but Marquez also spread his talents to the ultimate Frisbee team and volleyball. Standing at only 5-foot-6, he makes up for his height with a great vertical and standout speed.

[u]Hawthorn School for Girls[/u]

Elenor Henry
She’s a five-sport player for Hawthorn’s squads, coming to play for the soccer, ball hockey, basketball, volleyball and skiing teams. At 16 she’s got a few more years in the tank, ready to compete.

Madelyn Piccinninni
You’ll see Piccinninni’s name atop the golfing leaderboards at CISAA. This 16-year-old is hitting the links so much that she’s qualified for the provincial championships. She’s also a member of the French club. How do you say, “Fore” en Français?

The North Stars’ top male athlete, Gendelman hit the field of play with authority. His sports: volleyball, swimming, badminton and waterpolo. He was the captain and MVP of all teams save badminton.

Donning the red and black for Newtonbrook’s cross-country team was van Wijngaarden. Not one to stop in her tracks, she also took on swimming and waterpolo.

[u]Northview Heights Secondary School[/u]

From the land of Phoenix comes James Rashev and Amanda Molinaro as athlete of the year nominees.

[u]Senator O’Connor Catholic Secondary School[/u]

The resident Blues from the TCDSB that caught their coaches’ eyes were Josh Rumball and Samantha Tamburro.

[u]Toronto French School[/u]

Marc McGuire
This is the second year for McGuire being nominated to the Town Crier Athlete of the Year awards, and with this year he’s tacked on more success. He scored a trip to Sudbury for Track and Field OFSAA and kept up with his senior soccer, basketball and ultimate Frisbee teams.

Ann Marie Leung
Just because Leung’s in grade 10 doesn’t mean she can’t play senior soccer or volleyball. The MVP of the v-ball squad and most sportsmanlike in footie, Leung also took part on the junior girls basketball team. On top of that she’s a straight-A student.

Vic Park’s picks for top athletes feature basketball team star Hamidou Ongoiba and Kira Fulford.

[u]William Lyon Mackenzie Collegiate Institute[/u]

Anthony Nesci
The captain of the wrestling team brought home the St. Catharine’s Invitational title along with silver in the regional championships and bronze in the Citys. In the process he overcame adversity as he has asthma. Nesci is an honours student.

Heather Sanchez
She’s the heart of the Lyons volleyball, softball and track and field squads. Sanchez was named most improved in 2011 on the softball team — a crew that won the North Region. She was also the MVP of both the girls and co-ed volleyball troupes. And before her graduation she tucked in a trip to OFSAA in 2010 with the volleyball squad.

[u]York Mills Collegiate Institute[/u]

John MacIver
MacIver’s main sports are cross-country, hockey, track and field as well as ultimate Frisbee. In his time as a Titan he has been the member of three consecutive North Region champion cross-country teams and two-time North Region track squads. He’s on the honour roll and will be heading to Brock University for the concurrent education program.

Mary Tanos
In the fall it’s basketball. In the winter it’s volleyball. And when the snow melts, she’s hitting the diamond for softball. Tanos is an all-round athlete who has buoyed her softball team to the city finals for two seasons.
