What started as a call to EMS for a medical complaint led to police confirming the city’s 25th homicide of the year.

Toronto EMS were called to a unit on the ninth floor of 100 Harrison Garden Blvd., a condominium near Yonge and Sheppard, on June 23.

“Shortly after 6:30 p.m., residents in that building on the ninth floor said they heard what sounded like a loud bang,” said lead investigator Det. Sgt. Dan Nielsen in a video appeal posted to YouTube. “A man who was either visiting the apartment or was staying there temporarily came out of the apartment and asked residents to call 911.”

“The man who had asked residents to call 911 fled the scene before police arrived,” he added.

Paramedics at the scene discovered a man suffering from an obvious gunshot wound and contacted police.

The man, identified as 28-year-old Hussein Hussein, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Nielsen said homicide investigators are looking to speak to a group of men who were seen leaving the premises shortly after the murder took place.

“There’s good quality video surveillance system in the building and what we’re able to see is shortly after the shooting four to five males leaving through a street-level side door,” he said. “The males are in their late teens to early 20s and they appear to be of African descent.”
