Dec. 9: Join shoe museum’s salon series

The Bata Shoe Museum invites you to join it for the last Salon Series event of the year, as guest speaker Romana Mirza considers ideas of modesty in the 18th century in her talk “Identity Performance and Privilege — Shifting Perceptions of Modesty and Disproving Stereotypes.”

The talk takes place virtually on Dec. 9 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Mirza discusses the impact colonizers had on the culture and society of the “biblical lands,” focusing on the loss of rights for women. The discussion will also fast forward to the 21st century and consider the increasing visibility of hijabis to discuss how different bodies are put in harm’s way or granted privilege based on sartorial expression.

Romana Mirza brings more than 25 years’ experience as a marketing professional and brand strategist to her scholarly work. She is a second year PhD student in Communication and Culture at Ryerson and York Universities.
