Helpful hints to battle mummy tummy

Fitness expert Julie Watson of AfterGlow offers seven things you can do to flatten your tummy without doing crunches

1 Sleep. It reduces inflammation. Always sleep when your baby sleeps. And when you exercise, make sure you get one hour of sleep for every hour of exercise so your body can repair itself.

2 Reduce stress. Stress releases cortisol, a stress hormone that stores fat, particularly in the tummy.

3 Drink water with lemon. It flushes out inflammation.

4 Watch your nutrition. When you’re in a rush it’s too easy to grab a muffin. Focus on real food (here’s a tip: if your grandmother wouldn’t recognize it, don’t eat it), watch your portions, and be prepared by keeping chopped vegetables and such on the ready in the fridge for snacks.

5 Exercise. Don’t do a 1,000 crunches and avoid anything intensive, especially in the first few weeks after birth. Try Kegel exercises for deep abdominal work and cardio to burn fat.

6 Take omegas. Pregnancy depletes omegas so talk to your doctor about supplements; also eat salmon, avocados, seeds and nuts.

7 Drink green tea, preferably loose-leaf and organic. It’s an antioxidant and as such helps rid the body of toxins. It also contains compounds that help boost the metabolism and burn fat.
