Family Day’s your chance to get out and enjoy the city
What are you planning to do on Family Day, Feb. 17?
Here are a few fun ways to keep the whole gang entertained.
Pack up the skates and embrace the great outdoors during Family Skate Day at Evergreen Brick Works. In addition to an outdoor skating rink, families can enjoy pizza from Pizzeria Libretto for $3 a slice. The day’s activities include nature and heritage hikes, a meet-and-greet with three-time women’s hockey Olympian Vicky Sunohara from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and, for parents, a family-friendly beer garden, GoldiBOCKS and the Three Beers.
Grab the creative troops and head to the Art Gallery of Ontario, which will be transforming itself into the KGO — Kids Gallery of Ontario — on Family Day. The Monday fun day is filled with many activities, including giant floor games, all-day dance parties, a gallery-wide game of Clue, and family yoga.
The Sears Great Canadian Chill is on Feb. 17–18 at Yonge-Dundas Square downtown. Families can cheer on participants taking the plunge into a freezing-cold pool to raise funds for the Sears Cancer Clinic at The Hospital for Sick Children and the Sears Childhood Cancer Fellowship at SickKids.
Unleash your wild side at the Royal Ontario Museum on Family Day weekend. Festivities include the return of the Earth Rangers animal show, featuring wildlife biologists and trainers, along with some critters. There will also be a chance to interact with live reptiles and amphibians, and head into the bat cave to get up close and personal with bats and owls. Kids can pose for pictures with Gordo, Gertie and Gurgle, the ROM’s dinosaur mascots.
Get to Sesame Street at the Ontario Science Centre for the newly opened exhibit “Sesame Street Presents: The Body”. The exhibition features three education zones related to the human body: your insides, an exploration of what goes on inside the body, your outsides, where children learn to identify different body parts, and staying healthy, where children learn about the importance of sleep, eating right and physical activity.
