Wexford wins first national championship
It was a squeeker for the Gleekers from Scarborough’s Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts.
The group known as Wexford Glee won the first-ever Show Choir Canada National Championships, which took place April 8–9 at Queen Elizabeth Theatre downtown Toronto.
The competition was a tight one though, as Etobicoke School of the Arts finished in a not-so-distant second losing out by just two-thirds of a point.
With schools from Unionville, Richmond Hill and Ottawa rounding out the top five, York Mills CI also put up a strong showing finishing in sixth place.
While Wexford won the top prize, an $8,200 grand piano courtesy of Yamaha Music, Etobicoke School of the Arts did pick up an individual award, as Jahlen Barnes received a one-week scholarship to Randolph Academy for the Performing Arts, valued at $1,000, for being the top male vocalist.
Seeing over 400 students in this year’s event, organizers have already slated next year’s competition for April 12–13.
