A boutique for all types of women

Artist and designer Bisa Bennett and her daughter Tijana recently achieved one of the goals for their new boutique called Notion Style: to appeal to a wide range of people.

In September they sold to a woman for her 90th birthday a shirt identical to one a 22-year-old customer had bought.

“We try for all age groups,” Tijana says at the shop on Yonge Street near Teddington Park Avenue. “We try to bring something from Queen West that’s unique, funky and artistic here in this neighbourhood. It’s just a different kind of style, it’s more European than some of the other boutiques and it’s a bit more funky and unique.”

“But we also keep in mind that it’s something a woman in her 40s, 50s, 60s can wear,” Bisa adds.

The boutique is home to European brands, casual and dress wear like tops, dresses and coats, as well as Bisa’s own custom line, which feature Tijana in all the promotional materials. Her recent collection for the Notion brand, which can be made to order, is a holiday line made from Italian velvet, silk and French lace.

“I have almost 25 years experience in art, photography, fashion, multimedia design and I used to work for one of the bigger architecture firms but my passion was always in fine art and fashion,” says Bisa, who has been sewing since she was 12 years old and has also made a name for herself in the art world. “I just decided to do what my passion is and it’s time now to do it together.”

“I studied psychology in school but I was always interested in fashion,” Tijana adds.
Although people discover the store when they walk by, others became interested in its custom creations during the Toronto International Film Festival when they were featured in Metro newspapers. Customers are coming in from downtown and Vaughan.
