Hitting the gym after school

Master Philip Jang trains young fists as well as young minds.

And now with the new location of his school, Ky Young Tae Kwon Do, Jang is better able to do what he does best.

Jang was originally a student of Master Jung Ko, a legend in the Toronto tae kwon do world. Five years ago, Jang acquired the school from Master Ko, who has since moved on to open other schools.

With the new digs at Dundas West and Runnymede, Jang has a place to truly call his own.

The new place features two separate gyms where two other full-time instructors and two part-timers offer classes and programs to students of all ages.

Particularly popular is the after-school program, in which Jang picks up kids from local schools and brings them to Ky Young where they do homework, have a snack and take tae kwon do lessons.

And this is where Jang’s teachings stretch beyond the kick and punch.

“We teach children through martial arts,” Jang says. “We teach them about the importance of being disciplined, having respect for elders and understanding self-control.”

But it’s not all hard work and discipline. Ky Young Tae Kwon Do has a children’s play area for the younger children and frequently host birthday parties.
