Just like grandma made it

Thoughts of milk and cookies bring Danielle Oron back to her childhood.

“Kids now are going to have that same feeling about milk and cookies later on in life — it’s just something that keeps going on through generations,” she says.

“My grandmother was like, ‘I remember when my mom used to give me some milk right from the cow and she’d bake.’ ”

Oron’s new Moo Milk Bar on Queen Street E. near Woodbine Avenue focuses mainly on homemade cookies, along with naturally flavoured milks like vanilla bean, banana chocolate, java and strawberry.

“As soon as I see one ingredient I know what I want to do with it,” she says, adding finding a great white chocolate has inspired a blonde brownie recipe. “Everything is made from scratch with the best ingredients here on location, so it’s almost like you’re walking into your mom’s kitchen and get that feeling of this was just baked here, I want this, it makes me feel good inside.”

Aside from the staples, the shop offers freshly squeezed lemonade, ice cream sandwiches made with her own ice cream and mini pies. Oron, who studied at the French Culinary Institute in New York and the Bonnie Gordon College of Confectionary Arts, also designs cakes and cookies for events such as weddings and birthday parties. While honing her skills at We Bake in Heels cupcake shop in Vaughan, she got the urge to branch out on her own.

“I had made a lot of cookies recently, in the past year and a half, two years, and everyone who tasted the cookies were like, ‘These are awesome, you’ve got to sell these,’ so it just built up in my head,” she says.

“Then the best thing to go with cookies is milk and I just wanted it to go hand in hand and you get that warm feeling of milk and cookies.”

As for the most popular thing on the menu, Oron can’t keep up with the demand for ice cream sandwiches, she says.

Although the classic chocolate chip cookies have also been popular, her favourite remains the brown sugar toffee bit cookie, which she describes as tasting like butterscotch goodness.

“A lot of people have come in and said, ‘That was the best chocolate chop cookie I’ve ever had.’ It just makes you feel so good,” she says. “Like I’m doing this for a reason.”
