New life for teacups and tea towels in company of beautiful flowers

Fresh floral arrangements from Periwinkle Flowers leave the shop in different containers, such as vintage teacups or wrapped in tea towels by Toronto-based artist Avril Loreti.

“I want to be sure that things I send out with my flowers are as meaningful a part of the gift as the blooms,” Jessica McEwen said from the flower shop on Mt. Pleasant Road and Soudan Avenue. “I wrap the tea towels around arrangements and they go out as hostess gifts.”

After 13 years on Avenue Road in North Toronto, Jessica McEwen relocated her flower shop to Mount Pleasant Village in June. While clearing out the old store and realizing how much stuff she’d accumulated over the years, McEwen says, she realized she wanted more quality homemade items to go out with her flowers.

The new location of Periwinkle Flowers features mostly Ontario-grown products as well as some Dutch varieties, like garden roses. She expanded her offerings to include things like scrubs, washes and lotions from Toronto-based Lovefresh and fragrant soy candles by Montreal’s Carriage44. Handmade ceramic bowls and mugs, and locally made mini planters and glass vases will be offered in the coming
weeks.

“When someone buys flowers they don’t just say hi I need to buy a rose, they tell you it’s for their girlfriend in high school that they haven’t seen in months and you get this story behind it, which I love,” McEwen said.

  • Lovely write-up Jessica. As I’ve said, Avenue Rd’s loss is Mt. Pleasant’s gain. Wishing you much success in your new sweet shop!
