Apartment fire claims a life

An 85 year old man is dead and a 74 year old woman is in hospital as the result of a fire at an apartment building in Forest Hill.

At about 6:35 a.m. on Jan. 24, fire fighters were called to a blaze in a seventh-floor unit at 10 Shallmar Blvd.

According to Dave Eckerman of Toronto Fire Services, officials think the fire may have originated within the apartment unit.

“We believe it started in the living room area,” said Eckerman. “However the final determination will be made by the Ontario Fire Marshall.”

Authorities extinguished the blaze before 7 a.m. but not before it had claimed a life. The woman was able to safely escape but the man was not.

“The woman was transported to Sunnybrook Medical Centre with severe smoke inhalation,” Eckerman said. “The male was dead at the scene.”

The fire did not spread to other units within the building and there was no formal evacuation.
