Award for a furry friend

The dog days of volunteering are over.

Angel, a white Shih Tzu has retired from her work as a volunteer for the pet therapy program at health centre Baycrest.

For their services to the community Angel and her owner Evelyn Weinrib each received a volunteer accolade from Eglinton-Lawrence MPP Mike Colle.

“It was very rewarding,” said Weinrib. “We each got two separate awards and Angel was also given doggy biscuits.”

Now, Angel spends her time at home while Evelyn continues to volunteer at Baycrest.

“When she retired, I realized how important she was to people,” said Weinrib. “A man I had never met came up to me one time and asked where Angel was.

“We’ve volunteered together for nine years, every day all day.”

Weinrib had been a longtime Baycrest volunteer before she got Angel at the Toronto Humane Society, Her grandmother was one of the founders of Baycrest.

“Through her, it’s always been a part of my life,” Weinrib said.

Evelyn is keeping the family legacy alive and well as she has moved a block away from Baycrest so she can walk everyday to volunteer.

She remains humble about her community involvement.

“This is my life, I get much more out of it, more than I give.”
