Fishy business on Bayview
For business owner Dave Garnett, De La Mer was a great catch.
He decided to open the fresh fish market on Bayview Avenue last December because there was nothing like it in the neighbourhood.
“It was a giant leap of faith but a perfect opportunity,” said Garnett.
He had always wanted to own a business and was in the process of buying a franchise with another company, he said. When it didn’t work out De La Mer was born.
“When I told my wife (about opening a fish store) she said, ‘What? Are you nuts? What do you know about selling goldfish?’ ” said
Garnett, who jokingly refers to himself the CFO or Chief Fish Officer.
To help him in his new business Garnett hired Blake Edwards, a trained chef with a great deal of knowledge about all forms of seafood.
“I see more of Blake than I do of my wife sometimes,” said Garnett with a laugh. “He says that I’m stuck with him for the rest of my
life.”
Since the opening of the store, Garnett said there has been a great response.
“We definitely feel apart of the community. Everyone knows everyone. It’s like a little family.”
