North Toronto is home to a new coffee shop. All the baking at The Espresso Room, which opened in September on Yonge Street near Teddington Park Avenue, is done in front of customers. That includes freshly baked bread. The café offers lattes, cappuccinos, brownies, focaccia, butter tarts and other staples, as well as seasonal treats like pumpkin muffins.

Leaside’s Olive Oil Emporium is celebrating its first anniversary on Bayview Avenue. Andreas and Mary Voulgaris offer more than 50 extra virgin olive oils and balsamic vinegars on tap. To keep their selection fresh, the oil is bottled only after customers select the kind they want to take home. The shop carries olive oils from both hemispheres, which are harvested during different times of the year. Shoppers can ask for free samples to discover how the flavour profiles can range from grassy to fruity and from mild to intense.
