Councillors cluck at hen study
The municipal licensing and standards committee has backed away from studying the feasibility of keeping backyard hens in Toronto.
On Jan. 25, councillors voted to defer the matter indefinitely, which means keeping backyard hens isn’t likely to be legal in Toronto any time soon. Several municipalities across Canada have removed restrictions on keeping backyard hens, which many residents use to produce eggs for personal consumption.
St. Paul’s councillor Joe Mihevc, who says several people in his ward and across the city currently keep chickens, had requested a study to see if Toronto could follow suit.
