Couple charged after gun found in diaper box

A couple is facing numerous charges after police found a loaded handgun in a diaper box.

On Aug. 26 just after 3 a.m., police executed a search warrant and entered a home on York Mills Road near Don Mills Road. In the residence, police found the loaded Beretta Parabellum 9 mm, which they allege was stolen, hidden inside a diaper box.

One of the charges, possession of a firearm obtained by the commission of an offence, suggests that the couple had the loaded weapon as a result of theft, according to Constable Wendy Drummond.

“(The charge) means the gun itself was stolen,” she said. “(Police) would have checked it on the registry.”

Drummond said she wasn’t sure whether the couple or a child was at the residence at the time the search warrant was executed.
Kaino Wright and Chantel Hamilton, both 25 years old, are facing eight charges each, including unauthorized possession of a firearm, careless storage of a firearm and ammunition, and possession of a firearm knowing the serial number has been altered, defaced, or removed.

Both accused had scheduled court appearances on the same day they were charged.
