SOBER REMINDER: A bouquet of flowers is left at the Avenue Road an Davenport Road intersection as a makeshift memorial to a 26-year-old cyclist killed in a hit-and-run Saturday night. A 19-year-old Keswick man faces charges.

Cyclist Carla Fisher says you take your life in your own hands when riding your bike in the vicinity of Davenport Road and Avenue Road.

Standing in front of a makeshift memorial for a 26-year-old man struck and killed in a hit-and-run at the intersection on Saturday night, Fisher said she is convinced “this is the worst corner in the city.”

“People are flying up here like it’s (Highway) 401,” she said, as the squeal of tires from nearby traffic muted her voice. “I cannot tell you how many times I see people on their phones, texting.”

The investigation into the death of the cyclist, who was struck while attempting to turn east onto Davenport Road from Avenue Road, is ongoing, said Const. Clint Stibbe of Traffic Services.

Mitchell Irwin, 19, of Keswick, turned himself in to police in York Region on Sunday. He has been charged with criminal negligence causing death, dangerous driving causing death and failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing death. The 26-year-old was rushed to hospital but died of his injuries.

Irwin was expected to make a court appearance in Toronto today.
