Death draws murder charge

Police have charged James Chalaturnyk, 33, with second-degree murder in the death of a 67-year-old Annex man.

On Nov. 4, officers were called to a basement apartment on Bedford Road where they found the lifeless body of Gerald Robert Brown.

Police say the body showed obvious signs of trauma and Brown was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy the following day determined the cause of death was a sharp force wound to the neck.

Chalaturnyk was Brown’s roommate, and neighbours say he often displayed unruly behaviour, in sharp contrast to Brown.

Neighbour Robert Clark says Brown lived in the apartment for five years, and Chalaturnyk nearly three. He often spotted Brown walking to the store with his dogs and says he was friendly and quiet.

Police arrested and charged Chalaturnyk a day after the autopsy was performed.

Chalaturnyk was scheduled to appear in court Nov. 9.
