Hero's body found in building

Police confirmed the body found in the rubble of a building that went up in flames in the Dupont and Bathurst area on Oct. 31 belonged to a woman who alerted occupants to the blaze.

Police identified the woman who died in the fire as Marie Speck. She was originally reported missing.

Workers clearing the debris in the building found her body three days later, said Fire Captain Adrian Ratushniak.

Speck, 50, was not a permanent resident of 1079 Bathurst St. Police believe she was staying with a friend.

Police are hailing Speck a hero, because she alerted building residents to the fire in the building, Constable Tony Vella said.

“No one else was hurt because of her actions.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
