Leaside green thumbs blossom in festival

Leaside Garden Society's winning design
WINNING BY A HEAD: Leaside Garden Society’s “Horsepower” got the nod for first place in Design in March 13-22 Canada Blooms festival.

An exhibit entitled “Horsepower” won first place in the open Design category for the Leaside Garden Society at the Canada Blooms flower and garden festival, held March 13-22 at the Direct Energy Centre at Exhibition Place in Toronto.

The project took a couple of months of planning and “the exhibit was put together in one team member’s kitchen, with much discussion and debate as plants were placed and replaced, the horse’s head moved and angled and the flower wreath planned,” the LGS said in a statement.

Competition rules called for “a container or containers planted with compatible plant material and including fresh cut flowers and/or foliage, suitable for a display beside a horse jump.” In putting together the winning design, garden society members grappled with details that included what plants to select — as well as where to put a horse’s head.

The Leaside Garden Society was also awarded the prestigious Garden Clubs of Ontario Award for Best Exhibit in Class 36.

The competition category was open to non‐professional exhibitors and members of horticultural societies and garden clubs other than The Garden Club of Toronto. LGS has a long and successful history of entering the team events at Canada Blooms, which is now in its 19th year.

Canada Blooms is the largest combined home and garden event in Toronto.
