Mariam's father held after stabbing

Lawyer David Burke has confirmed reports that his client Vakhtang Makhniashvili, father of missing teen Mariam, has been arrested in a double stabbing that happened at a Greenwood Avenue townhouse earlier today. Though a suspect is in custody, no charges have been laid.

Several news reports indicated Makhniashvili, who has been under strict bail conditions after allegedly stabbing a man in a midtown building earlier this year, was in custody today at 55 Division in connection with the stabbing.

Meanwhile, the scene outside the townhouse this afternoon was one of chaos, as the home was cordoned off by police and reporters milled about.

Restaurateur Victor Su, owner of Chino Locos just steps from the townhome, said he heard what he called a horrific scream coming from the house around noon. When he went outside to see what was happening, he witnessed a woman in her bathrobe on the steps of the townhouse throwing objects at a man. It appeared the woman’s arm was bleeding, he said.

Catching a quick glimpse of the man, Su said he appeared calm, but then quickened his pace as walked away from the house.

“It’s a scene that you wouldn’t expect in a neighbourhood like this,” Su said.
