Matlow goes off the air

Josh Matlow may be just starting out his political career, but it appears his secondary career as a radio broadcaster is coming to a close.

The St. Paul’s councillor has been replaced as host of The City, a Sunday afternoon talk show on Newstalk 1010, by none other than Mayor Rob Ford and his brother, Councillor Doug Ford.

The station announced the change-up this morning during an on-air interview with the Ford brothers.
Radio host Jerry Agar insisted the station wasn’t giving the newbie councillor the boot, just changing direction.

“This is not the case of Newstalk 1010 deciding to unload Josh Matlow, that Josh Matlow did something wrong,” Agar said. “The show wasn’t called the Josh Matlow show — it’s called The City.”

The two-hour show, which airs Sunday afternoons from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., features politicians and other guests discussing municipal matters.

The Fords promised a lively and controversial show.

“I think it’s going to be very informative, it’s going to be controversial at times, but you’re going to get the straight goods from Rob and I,” Councillor Ford said.

The Ward 2 rep took a jab at media coverage of municipal affairs, saying listeners won’t have “the media twisting it around like they’ve constantly twisted it around for a year and a half.”

The mayor said they will feature high profile guests and talk about provincial, federal and municipal politics.

“Outside of that, we’ll talk about events that are coming up, encourage people to attend those events, and encourage people to participate in the democratic process down at city hall,” he said.

The Fords discussed with Agar the latest controversies surrounding transit, and took a few questions from callers.

Matlow could not be immediately reached for comment.
