Police warn of break-ins at Yonge-Eglinton apartments

Toronto Police are alerting tenants of a Yonge-Eglinton area apartment building to be “extra vigilant” after several units have been broken into in the past two months.

The building at 140 Erskine Ave. has reportedly seen 11 break-ins since March. It is one of three in a complex run by Homestead Land Holdings Inc., who refused to speak about the rash of break-ins affecting their tenants.

Police warning of break-ins
BE VIGILANT: Police posted this warning by the elevators at 140 Erskine Ave. after several units were broken into.

A representative for the company said they’d been instructed by superiors, who the rep would not name, not to give any information to the media.

A notice posted by police in 140 Erskine Ave. warns tenants of all three buildings, including 110 and 160 Erskine Ave., that the buildings are being targeted and that the person responsible may reside in the area.

The notice tells residents to make sure they are securing their apartments and all valuables, as well as locking the door when they aren’t home.

A woman who lives at 140 Erskine said she had not been affected by the recent break-ins, but had been victim of one in the past when she lived elsewhere. She said her experience was “traumatic” and did not want to talk about the latest ones.

Police describe the suspect as a white male, age 45-50, 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds. He has black, shoulder-length hair and was last seen wearing black pants and a white t-shirt.
