Portion of Finch closed as crews repair road
Finch Ave. West remains closed between Wilmington Ave. and Dufferin St. while crews repair a giant sinkhole that opened up on Friday during a heavy rainstorm.
The sinkhole is about five metres in diameter and 14 metres deep. A second smaller sinkhole also formed just east of the original.
Officials say a leak in a storm drain below the surface of the street is the cause of the sinkhole. When a storm drain leaks, the street begins to weaken and wash away, eventually causing the road to sink into the ground.
City staff is now coordinating the repair with the Toronto and Regional Conservation Authority.
Finch Ave. is closed at Bathurst St. to all but local traffic.
