Don Mills sent into hibernation

Don Mills Bruins just couldn’t match the intensity of Northview Phoenix.

On Feb. 22, Bruins Tier 2 boys hockey team lost 6-0 to a strong Northview roster that was afire.

The Phoenix got on the board after Kevin Maksym scored alone on Bruins’ goalie, Noah Toccotte. However, Toccotte made numerous saves as the puck spent much of the first period in his zone.

The second marker came with a minute left in the first. Maksym was in the giving mood as he assisted on captain Raymond Fallis’ goal, off the right post and in.

A positive was Don Mills penalty kill. A crosschecking penalty by Caflen Davey was no trouble thanks to the pads of Toccotte. Unfortunately Northview was able to skate through the Bruins defence seamlessly, and Fallis flicked in his second goal off another Maksym assist.

Later in the period Fallis notched an assist of his own, passing it to Gord Brown who went top shelf.

During the flood between periods, Don Mills coach Heather Allen made the tough decision to opt for Steven Strack to finish the game instead of Toccotte. She insisted the score had nothing to do with the decision.

“We actually have two stellar goalies so we usually like to share the ice time,” Allen said. “There was no other motivation behind it, just to give them equal opportunity to showcase themselves.”

Northview clanked two shots off the post early in the third, but found their groove again against a deflated Don Mills squad.

Fallis earned his fourth point of the game with an assist on James Bauman’s marker and Maksym got his fourth aiding in Vid Jazbec’s breakaway goal.

Northview’s Jazbec plays for the Slovenian national under-18 team and coach Julian Fiorio said he is an invaluable asset.

“He’s an excellent player,” Fiorio said. “We’re very lucky to have him.

“He’s a lot more advanced than some of the other players but he really passes on his skills to the other teammates.”

Although Jazbec and his squad earned the victory over Don Mills, Allen said the Bruins will face Northview again in the playoffs.

“It was unfortunate,” Allen said of the score. “The boys played with heart and class so that’s all I can ask.”
