Goliaths hit .500 in lacrosse tourney

It was an up and down tournament for East York Goliaths field lacrosse squad May 14.

The Goliaths beat Cardinal Newman 8-3 in their first game, but ran out of gas against Malvern in their second game losing 9-0.

Still, East York coach Mike Perovic was pleased with the overall play of the squad.

“I thought we played great,” he said. “We did a good job against Cardinal Newman, our midfield played really tight and our attack guys followed the system.

“In the second game, Malvern is really in a different league.”

The lack of gas was due to playing back-to-back games, which was tough on the young squad.

“We had played two games in a row, so fatigue had set in a little bit and we ended up rolling our entire bench,” said Perovic. “We put in some guys who haven’t played against that type of team yet.

“We wanted to spread out the field and limit their offensive opportunities and we just didn’t do a good job of that.”

Perovic said he wants his team to continue building towards its ultimate goal of making the semi-finals.

“With the win earlier today we are guaranteed a playoff berth and that was one of our goals at the start of the season,” he said. “We want to try to avoid playing a number one seed and hopefully get into the semi-finals.”

In order to continue drive for the post-season, the Goliaths need to play hard in every game.

“We have to show a willingness to compete,” Perovic said. “We talk about that everyday and you have to be ready to compete and follow the game plan that has been developed.”

East York hopes they are part of a larger plan to grow field lacrosse the city.

“We are trying to build lacrosse at East York Collegiate,” said Perovic. “The plan is if we can make the semi-finals and build a program.

“The feeder schools see that we have lacrosse, we may then send kids to the elementary schools to hold a lacrosse session and then another team springs up and so on,” he added. “If that happens then we will have a league of 10 to 15 teams.”
