Stintz, too, favours food trucks at Yonge and Eglinton
[attach]7630[/attach]Ward 16 councillor and mayoral candidate Karen Stintz has come out in support of food trucks arriving on midtown Toronto streets, adding more local political weight to the notion as the city considers relaxing its food truck bylaws.
“I think we need to make it easier for food trucks to offer a variety of foods to residents across the city,” Stintz told the Town Crier on March 21, three days after the city’s Licensing and Standards committee recommended new standards. “Right now the main option is hot dogs and chips, and I think we need to expand those offerings, and I look forward to food trucks coming to Yonge and Eglinton.”
Neighbouring councillor Josh Matlow, Ward 22, has been a longtime proponent of allowing food trucks to operate in the bustling Yonge and Eglinton area.
“They add life to main streets,” he said after the licensing committee meeting. “There seems to be a fear and a mythology that somehow food trucks compete with bricks-and-mortar restaurants, and that’s not true.”
Stintz also called the proposed legislation, which would allow licensed food trucks to pay for parking and operate for five hours at a time at any metred space or parking lot that is at least 50 metres from an open restaurant, “an example of how the city is working better with small business.”
City council will vote April 1 on whether to make the proposed bylaws official.
