The Ontario Community Newspapers Association has named the Town Crier Newspapers finalists in five categories at their annual Better Newspaper Awards.

For the third year in a row Lorianna De Giorgio has been named a finalist in the Arts & Entertainment category. This year she was recognized for a piece she wrote on the local contestants on the TV show So You Think You Can Dance Canada for our September 2010 MidTown edition called “Yes. It seems they can dance”. At the 2009 Awards De Giorgio came second for her story “Girls allowed” on female comics, and in 2008 she took home third for her story “Blogging sensation launches book of ‘likes’ ” for an interview she did with the creator of the blog Stuff White People Like.

Our tradition of excellence in educational reporting continues with our work being recognized in both the Education Writing category and the Special Section category. Alex Keshen was recognized for her story in our Riverdale-East York edition on Eastern Commerce’s experiment with moving the start of the school day back to give students more time to sleep “Fewer yawns, better grades”. The Town Crier’s Kelly Gadzala took home third prize in this category at the 2007 awards for her article “Homework is wrecking our kids’ social lives. Discuss.” she wrote for Vaughan Today. For the second year in a row our October Education Supplement has been recognized as one of the best in the province. Last year’s guide took home third place.

Also nominated in the Special Section category was the Town Crier’s 30th Anniversary section. This publication looked back on the history of the paper from its founding in 1979 right up to the present day through recollections of those who were there and the stories they told.

MyTownCrier.ca is a finalist yet again in the Surfer’s Selection category, the winner of which is chosen by OCNA members rather than selected judges. Our website won this award last year and in 2010 is competing against our sister paper Vaughan Today’s site. Vaughan Today is also a finalist in the Best Web Site category and in Business Writing for a story written by Alexis Dobranowski “Buddies in booze” on a micro distillery.

Winners will be announced at a gala in Niagara Falls in May.
