Ward 29’s new councillor ready to work

Mary Fragedakis plans to start learning the ins and outs at city hall right away

Ward 29’s new councillor Mary Fragedakis has made history as the first Greek woman ever to be elected to Toronto’s city council.

“I am honoured and humbled to represent Toronto,” said the newly elected councillor at her victory party.

She says that her first priority will be to learn all about the goings on at city hall so she can be an effective representative for her ward.

The NDP-backed Fragedakis also took the time to congratulate Toronto’s new mayor Rob Ford.

Fragedakis bested former councillor and mayoral candidate Jane Pitfield who, after her loss became apparent, brought her entire family to Fragedakis’ headquarters to congratulate her in person.

Jennifer Wood, who had received several high profile endorsements throughout the campaign, placed third.

Fragedakis received 6,905 votes to Pitfield’s 4,499 and Wood’s 4,010.

There was some controversy last week when one of Pitfield’s supporters sent an email to Wood asking her to drop out of the race to avoid splitting the vote and allowing Fragedakis win.

Ward 29 was an open seat after the retirement of long-time councillor Case Ootes.
