Welcome to Rob Ford's Toronto

Toronto, Rob Ford is our new mayor.

Ford easily defeated all challengers taking over 47 percent of the popular vote and defeating his nearest challenger George Smitherman by almost 93,000 votes. Councillor Joe Pantalone came a distant third with 95,424 votes.

Ford’s message of lower taxes and cutting waste at city hall struck a chord with the electorate who voted for him in larger numbers than they did for his predecessor David Miller in 2003 or 2006.

“Rob Ford will bring accountability to city hall,” said Ward 32 candidate and Ford supporter Bruce Baker. “There was just too much party politics under David Miller.”

And while the mayor-elect has many detractors many wished him well after news of their victory.

“I would like to congratulate Rob Ford,” said federal NDP leader and Toronto-Danforth MP Jack Layton. “But he will have to work with people with a progressive vision of the city.”

While it’s too early to tell the kind of mayor Ford will become the people of Toronto will have four years to find out.
