Kids love Halloween. And why not? All that candy, simply for the asking! Add to the fun with these spooky delights, perfect for a Halloween party or just to slip into lunch bags for a special treat.
These really do look creepy, but they’re delicious. You can give them a deathly hue with a dash of green food colouring. Use
your favourite shortbread style cookie dough recipe or ours. And your food processor makes preparation a snap.
½ cup butter
½ cup shortening
1 cup icing sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2½ cups flour
1 tsp. salt
Preheat the oven to 375°F. Mix the butter, shortening and sugar very well. Add the egg and flavourings and blend well.
Now blend in flour and salt. Divide the dough in half. Pinch off pieces of dough and roll to form a finger, squeezing either side
of the centre to create the knuckle. Place on ungreased cookie sheet, and use a knife to make tiny cuts to represent the wrinkles.
Bake for about 9 minutes, or until the edges are just beginning to turn golden. Cool on a rack.
Squeeze a small amount of black or red icing on the end, then gently press the almond into the icing so it oozes at the edges.
Easy Rice Krispies squares take on a new shape for the season.
50 ml (¼ cup) margarine or butter
1.25 L (5 cups) miniature or 40 regular
(250g pkg) marshmallows
2 ml (½ tsp) vanilla extract (optional)
1.5 L (6 cups) Rice Krispies cereal
In large saucepan over low heat, melt margarine. Add marshmallows; stir until melted and well blended. Remove from heat.
Stir in vanilla and a few drops of orange (or red and yellow) food colouring.
Add cereal, stirring until coated. Roll small handfuls into firm balls. Insert a small piece of pretzel or Tootsie Roll into the top for the stem. Allow to cool completely.
Draw a face with black chocolate icing. A little green icing can make leaves.
